I must be a masochist!

Post by CBris »

Doing these kind of patterns that have to be wrapped is worse than doing jigsaw puzzles of a herd of Zebra.

But one question couldn't be answered by my internet searches: does anyone know whether the pattern is reflected along the middle lines or is the pattern a full "spiral" wrap? If it is a spiral wrap, then where is the final mismatch? Centre underside? All that I can find on the net are straight forward side on views, no oblique views showing top and sides or bottom and sides.

I'll say! I don't know much at all about WWI aircraft markings, especially of the Central Powers nations, but this thread has some pictures which may help including this one:

Looks like it's a 'spiral wrap' as you say, though of course this is on a D.Va.

PITfA is merely a nice word, when it comes to expletives for this livery, but I am learning...

Well, I seem to be getting there. I spotted a few fundamental flaws in my thinking - all I need to do now is totidy up the pattern some more. Probably only another 5000 nodes to push backwards and forwards once I have "flared" the lines where they meet the rear of the cockpit coaming. And then another 5000 nodes if I decide to do the underside. That is IF I can get the pattern to align around the lower fuselage as well now.

With some judicious tweaking I could nearly approach the Old Rhinebeck Albatros, except that that has the oval cross section fuselage and the OEFFAG has three slab sides for simplicity...

Finished - well, near as dammit is to swearing - and will be available exclusively through my own website in a couple of weeks, once my new high speed connection is up and running.

Fictional because this is a D3 with box sides and the "wrap" will not go decently around the underside and I have had enough fun for now, and, and, and....

Excellent! And I am fully aware that it is a very difficult task to paint such pattern on the Oeffag's fuselage. Thank you for your hard work, CBris!

I have discovered a potential lapse in my thinking about the Bavarian tail wrap livery, so that is back in progress. In the meantime, Kurt Kallmunzer takes to the skies again:

Man, that WW1 German camo works! Now what was that about the Hun in the sun?

This one's still fictional, because it belongs on the oval cross-section rear fuselage, but it represents the livery as best I can see via Internet googling. As for the lozenge camo pattern, that's based on a repeating "wallpaper" repeating fabric pattern, dyed in the correct pattern by the manufacturers and clear doped on the aircraft. Scaled at 1.4 metres fabric width (around 410 pixels on the texture, chordwise lay-up on the wings, spanwise over the control surfaces and colours within acceptable reasoning when you consider that colour is a very hotly debated subject, when it comes to WW1 fabrics.

This one will be released for downloading.

Once you've got your own personal painkit prepped up with all the necessary base textures, the rest is relatively easy.
