Hi Nick.

I take it then, that we can no longer have a polished metallic paint effect, unless we use the old NON-PBR model?

Thanks.

Steve.

By the way. Just for comparison. This is what I get using PTA v2.67.

The PBR model.

and the NON-PBR model.

Same time, same day and same location. I personally prefer the PBR version.

That is a good question. I would like to know what format the dds is too. It looks likea DXT1 type to me, with no Alpha channel.

Also, by experimenting, the DXT5 and 888-8 format seems to work as well. Would there be any long term side effect to using the no-loss 888-8 format?

Yes. PBR certainly looks impressive. My only regret is that now, it looks like chrome spinners or chrome anything is now no longer possible.

With red channel in metallic texture you can control if the surface is metal or non-metal. If you set the channel to white then surface is pure metal (black - dielectrics/non metal), with albedo you can control the brightness/colour of the metallic surface to your taste, with roughness (metallic texture alpha) the smoothness of the surface (black - rough, white - polished). There is no reflection mask or specular map anymore, the smoothness of the surface is controlled by roughness - metallic texture alpha channel.

For metallic effect you have to copy c172_metallic.dds texture to your livery folder and edit it's metallic channel (red), than tweak albedo color and metallic alpha channel to your liking.

I recommend checking material section in Learning Center.chm in Prepar3D v4 root directory.

Thanks Michal. I shall have to look into this and see what can be done.

Well. Here's my second attempt. The first was a black version of this but I see the logic now and will refine it further, for just the spinner for instance.

Once more, thank you Michal. I can't wait for the Spitfire to go PBR.

:D

Sure. Here you go.

Dropbox download

For now, I think I have followed the A2A protocol. As in, the c172_albedo.dds is DXT1 with mipmaps and the c172_metallic.dds is DXT5, also with mipmaps.
No doubt the c172_albedo.dds could be given a slight blue tint

I'm giving up painting and taking up brain surgery. It's simpler.

I hear you. I can't see me doing this very often. Probably just to update the ones I have already done. When the time is right.
