g2d.dll & ntdll.dll CTD with A2A C172 - when raining (P3Dv5)

Post by Rhett »

Hi there,

I have installed the latest update for the C172 (as of yesterday) which I understand updates the windshield .dll module.

However, I am consistently getting a CTD in P3Dv5 HF1 (Windows 10 latest) when it is raining. The only way I can seem to prevent the CTD is turning the windshield.dll off.

Here is the crash log:

Faulting application name: Prepar3D.exe, version: 5.0.24.34874, time stamp: 0x5eab3677

Yesterday it was the following crash log as well as the one above:

Faulting application name: Prepar3D.exe, version: 4.5.14.34698, time stamp: 0x5e94b5c2
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.18362.815, time stamp: 0xb29ecf52

Could this be related to the windshield.dll module ? It seem so ?

Happening at EGGP (Digital Design's Liverpool) with ORBX FTX England region and global products.

I checked that it wasn't the scenery causing this as I changed to a default aircraft with rain at the airport and no CTD. It does seems to be related to the A2A C172 windshield.dll.

It also doesn't crash with the A2A C172 loaded when raining and with windshielf.dll turned off.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi Rhett,

Are you using default P3D weather or the ActiveSky (ASP3D) beta?

Also, how do you have your display(s) configured? Any specialist setup for example, such as multiple monitors or undocked windows?

Thanks,

Hi Nick,

I am using Active Sky P3D Beta 5 (downloaded the latest this morning).

I am also using enhanced atmospherics.

I have two screens, one main quad HD screen for P3D and the other for other apps. I run P3D in full screen mode ("Auto-fill" main view is ticked). As far as I understand, I have no other windows on my main screen (just P3D running) and do not use the ATC window at all. I do have several windows (programs) on my second screen (like simtoolkitpro, ASP3D, etc.). However, no really sure what "undocked" really means?

Thanks for you help.

Hi Rhett,

Thanks for the additional info. Please can you check if the CTD still happens if you launch P3Dv5 without ASP3D running and just use the sim's default rainy weather theme.

Hi Nick,

I tried again without ASP3D and with the Windshield.dll active - and got a different CTD error log as follows (grey and rainy weather mode set, with enhanced atmospherics) @ Digital Design's Liverpool EGGP @ GA parking #3:

Faulting application name: GTN Simulator.exe, version: 6.62.4.0, time stamp: 0x5ecfde0d
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.18362.815, time stamp: 0x2995af02

I also got the same CTD at a different airport (ORBX Cardiff GA / maintenance area) with grey and rainy weather set, with enhanced atmospherics, no ASP3D.

Faulting application name: GTN Simulator.exe, version: 6.62.4.0, time stamp: 0x5ecfde0d
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.18362.815, time stamp: 0x2995af02

However, I have discovered something . . . . the above CTDs only appear to happen when I switch the battery and avionics on and the GARMIN GTN750 turns on and it is raining and Windshield.dll is active. No CTD in cold and dark state. No rain, no CTD. I double checked that nothing I could do ended in a CTD when there was no rain on the windshield - just to be sure about this observation.

Pulling up one of the A2A menus (e.g. Shift + 3) might also assist with triggering a CTD (it did the last time it crashed a moment ago with the fault log below).

Faulting application name: GTN Simulator.exe, version: 6.62.4.0, time stamp: 0x5ecfde0d

Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I tried once more with Windshield.dll active, no ASP3D, grey and raining weather: no CTD . . . . until I turned on the battery and immediately it resulted in a CTD as follows (i.e. before the GTN was turned on):

Faulting application name: Prepar3D.exe, version: 5.0.24.34874, time stamp: 0x5eab3677
Faulting module name: g2d.dll, version: 5.0.24.34874, time stamp: 0x5eab3610

Faulting application path: F:\Prepar3D v5\Prepar3D.exe
Faulting module path: F:\Prepar3D v5\g2d.dll
Report ID: ae4174dc-c183-46d0-9101-71c5503edec2
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

With Windshield.dll deactivated, no CTDs - irrespective of the weather conditions, menu's being opened, scenery and ASP3D active or not.

In summary: Windshiell.dll + battery on and/or GTN750 on + rain = CTD.

Thanks and regards,
Rhett Kelly

Thanks for the info Rhett,

Yes, looks like the F1 GTN gauge is crashing in the situation above. I think it's fair to say that overall stability in P3Dv5 still has a way to go but it'll be worth checking to see if the same issue is reproduceable on your system once Hotfix 2 is available, which should be soon.

Meanwhile, we'll continue to investigate from our end.
