P3D 5.1 CTD with 172 trainer

Post by Exelta »

Hi all,

I just bought your plane today. It crashes as soon as i load the 172 with default graphics in any default airport. Tried a reinstall, deleting .cfg file and shaders, no luck. DX12 installed (and Dxdiag says it's working), built in mobo sound card. Sim was installed a few days ago. New computer on Win 10 up to date. No add-ons except the Q 400, FLAI and CYUL airport by Fly Tampa. Graphic card drivers are up to date, as well as drivers, to the best of my knowledge. AMD CPU and GPU. I applied the recommended fix at install. As soon as the scenario loads and i click anywhere on the image, P3D becomes faded and unresponsive and a couple of seconds later the message along the lines of "P3DV5 is not responding, do you want to wait or close, etc." appears. I wish I could include the Dxdiag report but it exceeds the length authorized. Tried deleting .cfg file and shaders.

Here's the Configuration panel report (computer in French):

Hi Exelta,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing problems and thanks for the info.

Please can you just let us know which graphics card you're using, and what your monitor setup is? For example, do you run single or multiple monitors, and do you use any added software such as DisplayLink drivers?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

GPU is RX 5600 XT and I have one 27 in LG monitor and one 16 in Samsung monitor. No added software.

Thank you for your help.

Okay, thanks. It's possible this issue is specific to the AMD GPU and/or your multi-monitor setup. As a quick test, please can you try disabling the Windshield rain effects in the 172. To do this, navigate to the "Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons\A2A\Gauges" folder and rename or move the "Windshield.dll" file.

Cheers,

Renaming the Windshield.dll did not solve the problem.

Okay, thanks for testing as it's worth ruling out that module at an early stage.

Did you download the GPU drivers from AMD's own site or from a Windows update? I'd recommend checking your drivers against the former if possible.

I'd also recommend moving your Prepar3D.cfg file to a new location and allowing the sim to generate a fresh copy to see if the CTD still occurs with a default P3D configuration.

Thanks,

I used the installed AMD program to update.

No luck with deleting the .cfg file, unfortunately.

Thanks for confirming. I've just been checking the Prepar3D forums for reports of similar CTD's and there do seem to be a couple associated with AMD video cards; for example this one. Are you able to load other aircraft including those with PBR models (e.g. the default F-16) without any issues?

Yes, other aircraft load fine, my Q400 loads fine, just your plane.

Have you specifically tested with any other PBR models? The F-16 is the only default one I'm aware of. What I'm wondering is if loading a PBR model with 4K textures is pushing your system a little too hard.

Also, can you just confirm there are no other add-ons such as ASP3D or FSUIPC running too?

Thanks,

I tried the F-16 at your request. Looks all good. No idea what PBR is. I have uninstalled FSUIPC. At least it does not show up in the add-on folder nor in the menu bar of the sim. Don't know the other add-on you're mentioning.

PBR is Physically Based Rendering, a graphical technique which has only been supported since mid-way through the development cycle of P3Dv4 and only tends to be seen in newer add-ons. ASP3D is the version of ActiveSky for Prepar3D, and a popular add-on that many customers use, so important to understand any other bits running which may explain why you're seeing this CTD.

We can do a TeamViewer session or something if you'd like.

Thank you for helping out.

I'll do a bit more research into the CTD in question and find out if anyone else in the team has any suggestions. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

One quick question Exelta. When you installed the 172, did the DirectX 9 web installer run successfully?

Thanks,
