Nav lights

Post by Simicro »

Hi,

Unless I mislooked, the Cherokee has:
- Strobe light
- Landing light
- Beacon light

But it does not has Nav light (green and red) on the wingtips?

That is normal I believe?

It also has the standard nav light package; red/green on the wingtips and white on the tail.

Oh! Is it an option that I mislooked in the 2D panels (SHIFT+X)?

Thanks Rob.

I found that Nav Lights are tied to instruments lights???

How is that please?

Why not one switch for Nav Lights and another switch for cockpit instruments light? I don't understand.

Good question...and I don't have the Cherokee, but that wouldn't make sense to me either......

Thanks for your view. Let's wait for views of other mates or A2A.

That's how it appears on the real thing. Some older airplanes have their instrument lights and nav lights behind the same switch, perhaps as if it would help you to remember to put them on during night.

So if you forget then you forget both (instruments + Nav lights). I don't like very much the principle.

But anyway, many thanks for explaining Esa.

Well, the idea is that you kind of see if you have the instrument lights off when it is dark enough you to need them. ;) If you need your instrument lights, the chances are that you ought be using the nav lights as well. In most aircraft, you don't see whether the nav lights are on from the cockpit, as they don't glow as spears of light in the air surrounding the bulbs in reality, as they often do in the sim.

Please note, though, that this reasoning is purely anecdotal; I have not looked up from any official sources if this was the actual reason why they were wired the way they were back then. These days, nav lights should be on, in my strong opinion, whenever the aircraft is electrically powered up.

Just a design choice. One switch works well enough in cars.

Yes, agreed. I was thinking not along the lines of forgetting to turn them on when needed, but rather separate switches to allow nav light operation independent from instrument lights. So if it was a DC decision and that's the way they were, then that's obviously the only reason there needs to be for the way they work in the sim. It's a poor day when you don't learn something! 8)
