I just went with the defaults, I didn't pay attention to which directory it was selecting. It may have been detecting my old FSX Gold installation.
After I read your message, I went back and reinstalled them again, this time manually selecting the correct path. Very happy to report that everything seems to be working perfectly now.
Thank you for all of your help. (But I still wonder what caused it to act like that, it was pretty bizarre.)

You're welcome Steve - thanks for the update and very happy to hear the issue is resolved. Unfortunately we can't be sure of the culprit, but a Windows or antivirus update may be one possibility.
