C182 magnetos check

Post by Heronjr »

Hi,
I've read in the C182 Manual about the Magneto Check topic that the RPM drop should not exceed 175 RPM. Well, my C182, purchased 2 days ago, is brand new, with less than 2 hours of flights, and the RPM drop certainly is greater than 175.

This same test in my A2A Bonanza is perfect, loosing 50 RPM in each magneto.

The test is made by the book, with 1800 RPM and mixture rich. The maintenance tells me the aircraft is "like new".

Any ideas?

"Loaded mags." Excess carbon deposits have accumulated on the spark plug electrodes.

That's interesting, I almost always get loaded mags in the Bonanza (I don't own the 182).... yet you report no problems.

The solution is you need to get the combustion in the cylinders hot enough, with enough pressure, and with a clean enough combustion....to break the carbon deposits off.

The common way to do that is to advance to 2,000 RPM with the throttle. Then, using the mixture knob only, lean to find maximum RPM. Maintain Maximum RPM with this procedure for about 45 seconds.

Then return the engine controls to your normal run-up configuration, and repeat the mag check.

Depending on how much carbon accumulated, you might need more than 45 seconds, or multiple mag clearing procedures.

The engine should also be warmed up with cht and oil temp at least in the bottom of rhe green arc.

You may also have an issue with the engine, a bad magneto could cause ignition issues.

Also the assumption that a fresh install provides a "brand new" aircraft is incorrect. When you first install three software you get a randomly generated aged aircraft. You may have some issues to fix.

Hey guys,
Following your procedures, things are perfect now with the magnetos check. Differences at 50 rpm. The engine now is responding better than before at climbing and cruise. A real wild flying horse.

Thanks a lot!!!

Heron,

It sounds like you had some plug fouling and should have noticed the engine running a bit rough one on that one mag. You could have cleared that out likely by running it hard statically for 30 sec or would have cleared a few minutes into your flight. You can go into your Maintenance Hangar (SHIFT-7) and install Fine Wire plugs to avoid fouling from idling and ground ops.

Hi Scott,

Yes, I did the run hard during 30-40 secs and after that things are back to normal. I will install Fine Wire plugs as you suggest.

Thanks and regards,
