Commanche Autopilot - Nav Hold

Post by M_D_F »

I have recently bought this aircraft and need some advice from other owners

Whilst I can get the plane's autopilot to follow a heading hold I cannot seem to get it to follow a VOR course. Although the HSI responds properly the plane seems to fly through the radial. It has locked onto an ILS with the correct mode but also to zig zag even when it is lined up carefully with the heading bug first. I am sure this must be something I am doing wrong, any tips would be appreciated.

Hello M_D_F,
This seems to be the trait of the Comanche. It will follow a NAV course but you must get it on the radial and following it with heading then engage NAV. And yes, it is rare to get the instruments to follow an ILS approach without it wandering back and forth until you finally just give up and land it manually. I fly VOR on almost every flight in the Comanche. Just get her lined up and then engage.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to know it's not my install.

I flew again last night and made sure I was trimmed and in heading hold on the radial before switching, it did hold it then. I did the same on the ILS lining up early and getting stable before switching over, it did had a good stab at it then but not as solid as the 172.

I have yet to try the Flight one gtn750 Nav hold to see if whether that gets a firmer lock.

It's a great plane though, really feels like you are in the air.

Do you know of a good guide to tuning the adf radio anywhere?

I found this a while back and stowed it away along with the manuals for the AP and other radios.
