Comanche unusable with EA in new P3D ver 5.2

Post by Seat7A »

In the new version of P3D 5.2, it is impossible to use EA Enhanced Atmopherics for Comanche because the cockpit becomes far too dark. Compared to the problems that existed in version 5.1, the problem has worsened. I know that the use of ENVESHADE contributed to an improvement in the previous version but at the moment ENVESHADE is not updated to work with ver 5.2. I have tried with some of the LM default aircraft and with the Leonardo MD-82 and here the Comanche stands out as the clearest. So it seems that there is something that can be affected. Is the problem known and are there any plans for action.

Just downloading v5.2.18.27565 via my rather slow connection now Thomas, so will take a look once it's installed.

Do you have any screenshots to show what you mean by "unusable"?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick
Thank you for looking at this problem. I have att a screenshot. I´m using EA. HDR is enabled and Auto exposure. Brightness 1.02, Bloom 0.42, Saturation 0.16. As you can see its a very dark cockpit and very hard contrast. I have also tried to use Chaseplane. Chaseplane has a lightning function in the camera tab. It is possible to get lighter in the cockpit but it has its price. Because you have to pull up the light so much, the clouds will be completely eroded seen from inside the cockpit. As I wrote earlier this darkness is particularly evident in A2A aircraft and perhaps especially in Comanche after the upgrade to 5.2. I don´t want to use FSL Spotlights as a solution . It will completely take away the immersion of the fantastic A2A aircraft.

Hi Seat7A,

Thanks for posting the pic. I wouldn't say "unusable" but I do know what you mean about the lighting in P3Dv5.2. To my eye anyway, the end result looks more like a photograph of a cockpit than how the human eye would actually deal with directly lit surfaces and those in shadow. Unlike in real life, this means it's pretty difficult to pick out details on dark coloured textures which are in shadow, even on a bright day.

This issue certainly isn't specific to the Comanche or to A2A aircraft in general. For example, if you load other aircraft with dark coloured surfaces in the cockpit (for example the default Commander 114, Connie or Electra) exactly the same effect is visible: details in dark-painted areas which are in shadow are very hard to see.

What we plan to do now it's increasingly clear that this is the 'new look' of the sim is to create some slightly modified cockpit textures for those planes that will most benefit from it. We'll probably make these available as optional downloads, at least initially. However, depending on how they're received we may incorporate them into a proper update at some point.

Anyway, please stay tuned for further info on this.

Thanks,
Nick

P.S. In regards to your screenshot, I don't think the sim will ever look realistic when the saturation is set to such a low level.

Thank you for your answer. I look forward with excitement to what can be achieved to make the cockpit brighter. I will also have a look at my saturation setting. :)

Hi Thomas,

Have you tried out the updated version of Envshade for P3Dv5.2? It's pretty effective at toning down the HDR contrast and shadow depth.

Thanks,
