A lucky chap indeed! Almost as lucky as Nicholas Alkemade's famous parachute-less escape from his burning Lanc. :)

Thanks,
Nick

Its not unfamiliar with some of the LUCKY's Lancaster rear gunner forced to jump and survived from around 13/15.000 ft without a chute, that would have to be the luckiest fall in history.... be worth digging up the story. 8)

I just now found some time to read that story Nick. Man that's unbelievable. What a lucky guy after all! It's a good read too!

Yes, Alkemade's story is certainly remarkable, though there are a few more records of escapes from stricken WWII aircraft where a parachute was not used. A B-17 ball turret gunner called Alan Magee had a similar experience, as did a Soviet Airforce navigator called Ivan Chisov. Both suffered more severe injuries than Alkemade though.

Apparently the record for the highest fall survived without parachute belongs to a Serbian flight attendant called Vesna Vulović. However, she was trapped within part of the aircraft (a DC-9) during her fall in 1972, so perhaps that's more a story of a remarkable plane crash survival.
