the 550 seems a fine engine in reality. I was once involved with an IO-550 STC, non on the Bonanza though, as an operator pondered whether to overhaul/replace the standard engine (some O-470), or to get an STC for a 520 or 550 while at it. After the fact, I think they chose wisely.
