Windshield rain effect but no rain or clouds.

Post by Dreamsofwings »

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. I am seeing the rain effect but there were no clouds above and no rain in the sim. Is this a known thing or do you think I have a bug in my sim that I need to seek out?

Hi Rob,

I haven't experienced this with my own installation, but then again I haven't accumulated much time in P3D since the v5.1 HF1 release. Are you using default weather or the ActiveSky beta when this happens, and is it something you're seeing regularly, or just a one off?

Cheers,

Hi Nick,
This was with the Activesky Beta with latest update for Hf1. Do you think that is what could be causing it? I know AS for v5 is still work in progress but thought perhaps the windshield effect was purely triggered by wether rain was present in the sim or not but thats me coming from a position of ignorance! :D
I have seen it before in v5 but not used weather much in it prior to HF1 due to the awful aliasing issues that were present before HF1.

Okay, thanks for the added info Rob.

If this happens again, please can you check the current weather conditions being reported by ASP3D. (i.e. whether the "conditions" page on the ASD3D client is showing anything under the "precipitation" heading.)

Okay, thanks. For what it's worth I just spent half-an-hour or so loading a bunch of historical weather scenarios with ASP3D and nothing seemed to be amiss in terms of rain detection. But I wonder if there are some conditions where the precipitation depiction in the sim won't match exactly the live precipitation being reported by ActiveSky.

Could be. I will re-run my flight this morning with historical and see if it does it again.
Are you using EA?

Run some testing on the flight I did this morning and now I am beginning to wonder if in the conditions it's just very hard to see the rain in an external view with the cloud and poor viz that was loaded in. The precipitation in Conditions was set to light rain and at first I wasn't seeing any rain as per the screenshots below but then after a while if I kept staring at the screen (party central at my house this evening) I could see every now and then a faint streak go past. I will park this and keep an eye out and see if it happens again. I think in V4 I probably had enhanced rain effects from something like Sky Force which made the rain more obvious perhaps. Or I am just getting old and need to lay off the tea.
Thanks for your help Nick and if I see it happen without rain I will let you know.

Ran another test this morning (with fresh eyes) and definitely seeing rain on windscreen with nothing outside. I tested this by setting a metar in AS using the "Rain Drops" preset and could clearly see rain in the sim.
Will just keep an eye on it in future flights and see what it's about. If you aren't seeing this issue Nick it must be something going on in my sim.
Just in case you or anyone wants to see if it just freak conditions (whilst having a pleasant flight in strong winds :D I had AS set to historical (set to sim time) and departing EGEF at 09:40 on Sat 21st Nov 2020 and heading to EGPA Kirkwall. Not that long after take off the windscreen effect starts but no precipitation outside. Weather conditions in AS show light rain.

Thanks for the update Rob,

So, sounds like it's a case of P3Dv5.1 with EA enabled not always correctly displaying the precipitation that ASP3D is reporting rather than the Windshield.dll incorrectly decoding the ASP3D precipitation state.

Might be worth posting this on the ASP3D open beta forum, though they do make the following statement on their site. "Note that EA mode, while greatly improved in P3D v5.1, still has certain limitations and issues which are outlined in the updated User’s Guide (EA Mode Limitations chapter) and should be reviewed by all. We expect limitations and issues to be improved/resolved with the expected P3D updates from Lockheed Martin, coupled with our planned ASP3D improvements designed to take advantage of these updates."

Yes I guess while everything is still being tested it isn’t surprising there are a few odd phenomenon!
I will wait and see if the final AS release solves it. At least I know I have a test scenario now and I trust my Windscreen effect more than my AS!
