Keyboard and Joystick Assignments P-40

Post by seebsseebs »

Thank you again for your generous free download which I have got. I am having some difficulty assigning a keyboard letter "G" for landing gear and the same applies for my joystick. Neither will operate the landing gear. Do you have any ideas?

Hi seebsseebs.
The landing gear on the P40 needs the gear selected and then you either manually pump it up/down with the normal or emergency hyd pump handle on the rightside of the pilot , or you use the electric pump by pressing the button on the joystick , same goes for the flaps , reading the manual on A2A aircraft and watching the A2A videos is advisable.

seebsseebs: You can hit Shift+1 to get the gear and flap lever "visualizer" pop-up. If you hit the [G] key you will be able to cycle the gear lever from neutral to down, then back through neutral to up, then back to neutral. You always want it in neutral when you are not actively raising or lowering the landing gear. Since the guns on the P-40 don't shoot bullets anyway, I've mapped the trigger on my joystick to operate the hydraulic pump with the P-40 aircraft configurator. Right after takeoff and achieving positive rate, I hit the [G] key, then squeeze the trigger. The top button on the joystick in the airplane is depressed. It takes a few seconds for the gear to retract. I let off the trigger, then hit the [G] key to neutralize the gear handle. The flaps work the same way.

Here is an actual WW2 training film to illustrate the "Ways of the Warhawk," (please take into account that it is a later model, but the hydraulics work essentially the same): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOIg7Jx ... x=5&t=19s.

Here's a video on how to land the P-40, which I requested from SimCFI a few years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG8uVYc ... 0A&index=4.

Here's a video from Scott, which actually uses parts from the first video above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTL8KtJawTQ.

Additionally, there's a series of P-40 tutorials posted by Dreams of Wings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvEYMw0iay0.

If I were flying a real P-40, I'd give the manual handle a few pumps, but I don't do that in my A2A P-40. The only way to lock the gear however, is to put the gear handle in neutral, so I'm always sure to do that.

Happy landings!
