P-51D tail wheel problem, not free turning.

Post by labrat4jafmc »

My eyes have crossed looking through the past forums and haven't seen the answer yet.

I have the WWII 1.2 patch and I have a problem with the P51 tailwheel staying in the locked and center position. FSX key command makes no difference and I can't find the control in the cockpit. I'm guessing it is some kind of program problem.

Also I am able to see terrain features thruogh the cockpit in small blocks surrounding the screws on the dashboard.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

The problem with the screws is caused by the fact that the aircraft was built for FS2004 and the release version of FSX. Subsequent patches for FSX including the Acceleration expansion have each changed how some textures are rendered. The bottom line is that the WoP 2 P-51D has a few glitches in FSX SP2/Acceleration and there isn't a fix yet. I believe A2A Simulations plans to return to the Mustang in the near future and make it an Accu-Sim project.

The historic tailwheel operation, as described in the 1945 training manual for the P-51D/K series:
The tailwheel is both steerable and full swiveling. It is steerable 6 degrees right or left with the rudder. The tailwheel lock is different from that of most other planes -- it is operated by the control stick. When the stick is in neutral position or pulled back, the tailwheel is locked and steerable. When you push the stick full forward, the tailwheel is unlocked and full swiveling.

Yes, convert the textures to DDS files and the holes will be gone

You have to convert two files, letterings1.bmp and lettering2.bmp.
You can find them in all texture.* folders, or if you have the Mustang set up in FSX style (so with a 'texture.cfg' file in all texture.* files, and just the outside textures in these folders), in the 'texture' folder.
I have attached a zip with the converted files, so just replace the files mentioned above with the ones in this zip.
Let me know if this works, OK?

O.k. I found the bmp files you mentioned. I saved a backup of both and deleted from the file. I added the .dds files and tried it out. Sorry to say that didn't work well at all. Every label on the update showed as transparent.

The file I accessed in FSX was c:\program files\microsoft games\microsoft flight simulator x\simobjects\airplanes\wwII_fighters_p51d\texture that held letterings 1 & 2.

I'm guessing that I did something wrong.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Thanks.

The file that Lewis sent to me did work. Thanks.

I did attach them (well see if it works) so that others can share them as I have seen other people looking at the post.

Just follow the directions that you have seen above and life is groovy. Very easy fix.

Thanks again everyone,

Lab Rat

Yes, Lewis' files work very well for me also.

While I'm thankful that a solution is finally available, it does peeve me a little that numerous people have complained about the cockpit anamoly over the last year and this is the closest we've come to an official fix. And it is such a simple one at that, should we really have had to wait for an elaborate patch with light bloom, self shadowing, etc? :?

Hello Magg, this is for the older P-51 for FS2004 and FSX. Here is the official patch for FSX SP2;
