Primer only starts?

Post by reflected »

If I recall correctly, the B-17 training video said that the B-17 should be started primer only. That means:
batteries, main switch, fuel shutoff, booster pumps, magnetos, etc... but mixture lever to "cut" - like in the Mustang. Then mesh, prime, start, keep priming if needed, and when the engine sputters to life, slide the mixture to auto rich. They said it reduced the risk of fire.

This ,however, doesn't seem to work in FSX. Am I doing something wrong, or maybe I misunderstood the training video?

By the way, the magnetos were also supposed to be switched on after one revolution, but that would entirely be a two man job to handle. I only have one mouse

I don't believe we had primer only starts coded for our B-17.

Ah, I had the same problem. From the pilot training manual or pilot flight operating instruction, I read that too and tried, but no luck

It is actually possible to start the engines on primer only, using a copilot program made by the user lequinne. This program enables starting the engines on primer only, so this way the mixture levers can be set to auto-rich when the engines fire up. :)

Sorry for bringing this old thread back up. I guess, this is still true for the P3D version of the B-17?

Tried today and had no luck with primer only starting. As soon as the mixture lever was in the full rich position, the engines could be started.
