Some Fonts not Scaling with Pixel_size Edit-Any Work-Around?

Post by lcoleman »

Hi Everyone,
I'm flying the B-17 in P3D v5 using a 4K monitor (3840 X 2160 resolution) and the old girl is simply stunning in this sim. I've enlarged the text in the 2-D pop-up panels by editing the panel.cfg file, doubling the pixel_size dimensions. This works well except for a few areas on the Payload and Fuel Manager (Shift-4) and Map Screen (Shift-5) where the font has remained very tiny. For example, on the Map screen the black text in the upper right of the screen depicting the Course, and the Nav or ADF frequency and bearing information presented in red text on the lower left of the screen as I've highlighted in the screen image below. It may just be the fonts in these areas can't be scaled, but I wanted to ask here in case some of you may know a way to make the text in these areas larger. My old eyes aren't up to the task of reading such small text! :) I'd appreciate any suggestions if there is a work-around for this. Thanks for your help!

Larry

Hi, I tested a manual fix for you. It seems to work good with 200% scale:

In two text files: manager.xml and mapscreen.xml, replace

<FontHeight>8</FontHeight>

with

<FontHeight>14</FontHeight>

MAKE COPY!

Report back with your results, pls.

I would try to increase the contrast.

You need to edit the radios.xml this time.
Make two "replace" operations:

1-Replace:
\{clr=0x505050}
with
\{clr=0x101010}

2- Replace:
\{nr} \{rev}\{bo}
with
\{nr} \{clr=0x101010}\{rev}\{bo}

(note there's a space after \{nr})

Let's not give up. Try to delete all instances of \{rev}
This will remove these dark rectangles below the frequencies. You will get just black digits.

If this is still not too good try to delete all instances of \{clr=0x101010}
You will get white digits.

Try to replace

\{clr=darkgray}

with

\{clr=0x101010}

in controls.xml file.

Thanks Rob, it is much better now, appreciate.
Maybe it is time to refresh whole 2D pop-up environment, and give some options for personalisation ?

Hi Everyone,
I'm very happy with the XML editing suggestions Rob provided, so I'm posting a few images of the results so others interested in this topic can visualize the results and decide if they'd like to do the editing as well. Thanks again, Rob for your help with this--I can read my map and profile screens clearly again! :D

Hi Everyone,
Rob also posted some suggestions for editing the Controls and Radios Panels for increased contrast to make the light gray lettering easier to read in response to Artur's questions. Below I've posted a few screenshots depicting the results of these edits.

Before and after image of Radio Panel after applying the two "replace" edits Rob outlined:

Result of previous edit plus the additional edit to remove dark background around digits:

Result of both previous edits plus the third edit to change the digits from black to white:

Finally, images comparing the original and edited Controls screen using Rob's edit to improve contrast. Night images are with the fluorescent night lighting on.

If you have struggled with reading some of these screens as Artur and I have, please consider applying Rob's suggested XML file edits for yourself. Thanks again to Rob for providing these suggestions!

Thanks,
Larry
