B-17 Engines starting without primer?

Post by frankie1029 »

Good afternoon everyone!
I was getting ready to do some flying in the B-17, but when I started engine number 3 with the normal 3 strokes of primer, the engine started right away! So I decided to try and use no primer and see what would happen. Engines 1, 2 & 4 started with NO shots of primer.
I was just wondering if this was normal for the B-17 because it seems odd to me. The panel says that Accu-SIm is ON.

Thanks in advance,
fc

Hi Frankie1029.
I have managed to start all my engines without the use of the primer in FSXA , but what i did observe was , the engines where cranking a lot longer than is good for them , and i got lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust , the primer helps start the engines more quickly , so it takes the strain of the starters , it helps lubricate the cylinders , and helps reduce the engine wear .
