P47 engine cuts out.

Post by Ron Attwood »

Decided to give my P47 an outing after a long lay off. Having re-acquainted myself with the ins and out of starting the beast, I set off. After a few minutes the engine simple gave up the ghost. Mmm, something I've overlooked. Fuel? OK. Temps? OK (only been in the air a couple of minutes!) Cowl flaps halfway open. Those shutter thingies on the left on neutral. Reset a few times, restarted FSX a couple of times, came on here a browsed, Delete the .dat files. Must be the answer.
No such luck. Still petering out. One odd thing I noticed, the engine started when I pressed the start button, but only the first time. Subsequent starts were with the inertia job.
This has to be a 'You plonker Attwood, you forgot to.....' Gis a clue please. :D

And the obligatory updated question :)
It's time I got the Jug out of the hanger as well. The Guppy has been taking up all my time lately.

Where was your mixture set, Ron?? Full rich or auto rich? It should be set at auto-rich for take off and climb, and I always set my oil cooler to full open for take off and initial climb (51in/full revs). Don't exceed 51in MP without the use of water injection. After that, I throttle back to 45in/2500rpm, set oil cooler to trail and cowl flaps to maintain CHT in the middle of the green arc. Don't use the turbo until you can't maintain 45in MP at wide open throttle.

Cheers,
Mike

From the top.
All levels full to the brim. In fact I think I spilled some. :D

Updates. All updated if the Accusim installer is to be believed.

Mixture. Several positions were tried, Full rich(can't think why I'd use that normally when there's an 'auto' on offer) Auto rich, my weapon of choice. Even auto lean was used in desperation! Even though I was only 1500ft above Duxford. :D I've no idea what all the inches is about but I can't believe the plane would give up the ghost so soon after take off. Maybe it would cough and splutter a bit, but die?
Cowling was half open and oil cooler shutters were on neutral.

Finally, What FSX settings do you mean Lewis? My FSX settings haven't been touched since Moses got his PPL

I think I'll uninstall it the reinstall. See what happens.

Thanks for all your input, fine fellows that you are. :D

EDIT:
In my P47 storage folder I have p47.exe, p47 patch 1.1.exe, P-47 Accusim.EXE and Accusim hotfix v1.11.EXE. Should I install all of those in order then install the latest Accusim update 10_03_15 or will the last Accusim update be sufficient?

Hi Ron,

You just need to re-install yhe base P-47 and the accusim expansion, then run the update.

You might also go into the FSX/A2A/P47 folder and delete the folder named "update".

Is it safe to assume that everything is good again?

Afraid not. :( After a reinstall still the same, in fact even starting the thing was impossible. Auto start didn't work and I couldn't turn off Accusim. So toys were duely throw out of the pram and I unistalled it.
Believe me, life is too short. :D

If I'm pressed for something to do in the future, I'll give it another go.

Thanks for caring.

Sorry to hear that Ron. But, I understand your position completely - these type of issues can be incredibly frustrating. As long as the rest of your fleet is doing well, why bother with one that has gone a bit dodgy!

Are you operating the turbo during the flight and if so, do you advance it before the throttle or reduce throttle before the turbo?

As soon as I got airborne I set it for 42 inches and about 2500 rpm and did an easy climb to 10,000 feet. I made sure everything was adjusted as necessary to keep everything in the green but by the time I got to altitude, my engine was spitting smoke out the exhaust and I was told I had serious engine trouble... again.
It seems like about eight out of ten flights I have engine trouble. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal? Is there some kind of random failure code built into the model?

This is just a possibility do you have the latest update for the jug ? Before the fix if you exceeded the manifold pressure red line for just a few seconds the engine was damaged. With the update you can over boost for short time without damage. It is easy to go into the red on takeoff. I have flown it so often I know exactly by feel and sound how far to advance the throttle without going into the red at my home airport.
