Can we load shotgun rounds during flight in spitfire mk2b? In Real life?

can we load cartridges in real life cruising at 10k altitude?

how did they put shotgun rounds in spit and where is it located in spit?

I’ve seen a diagram before somewhere...pretty certain they were loaded into the “revolver“ (for want of the real name....breech?) located towards the rear on the right side of the engine compartment, by the ground crew, after removing an access panel or cowling on that side.

It would be impossible for the pilot to access! :D

Seriously though, starts are usually routine if you follow the manual and have everything set up properly prior to pushing the button. If you can’t get it in three then you probably left out a step! :D

Also, you wouldn't want to use actual shotgun loads in the starter. Jus' sayin'.

Whilst you can't "reload" the cartridge cylinder in the air, you CAN choose the next round by pulling the breech control. So if you only used one in the startup, you should have two restarts while in the air.

If you are out of cartridges, you can trade height for speed and get the airscrew turning fast enough to do an airstart (provided you are high enough to begin with).
