Sunday, February 7 MP Flight - Highlands and Islands

Post by ratty »

The first combat of WW2 between aircraft of the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe occurred on Monday the 16th of October 1939, when Spitfires of 602 and 603 Squadrons intercepted a number of Ju-88s attacking the Rosyth Naval Base, across the Firth of Forth from the city of Edinburgh. Three bombers were destroyed for no British losses. As a small commemoration of this event we'll fly our Spitfires (Mk 1s, if you're absolutely determined to be historically accurate) from 603's base of Turnhouse (EGPH) on a 395-mile tour of Scotland's highlands and western islands.

On what promises to be a particularly scenic trip we'll pass the Rosyth Naval Base and the Forth bridges, Cairngorms National Park, Loch Ness, Skye, North Uist, Tiree, the Isle of Mull, and Loch Lomond.

You may regret this but I'll be there.

Note to self: Must brush up on Spitfire.

Did a couple of circuits at Duxford. First take off not too shabby. Landing was let down a bit by trying to lower the gear too fast. Port side wheel refused to play ball unbeknown by me, resulting in costly repairs. Suitably chastened, the second circuit conducted in a more proficient manner. Retired to the mess for a well earned cup of smug. :D

Sounds like you're ready to go! Now if we can just get Lewis to refine his radiator control a bit . . .

It's what is called covering your arse. So that even mediocre flying looks bloody good. The trouble with that tactic is that you can get patronised big time. 8)
