Sunday February 21st - Battle of the River Plate.

Post by ianfisher 101 »

The Battle of the River Plate was fought in the South Atlantic on 13 December 1939 as the first naval battle of the Second World War. The Kriegsmarine heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff, engaged a Royal Navy squadron, commanded by Commodore Henry Harwood, which consisted of the cruisers HMS Ajax, HMS Achilles and HMS Exeter.

Graf Spee had sailed into the South Atlantic in August 1939, before the war began, and had begun commerce raiding after receiving appropriate authorisation on 26 September 1939. Harwood's squadron was one of several search groups sent in pursuit by the British Admiralty. They sighted Graf Spee off the estuary of the River Plate near the coasts of Argentina and Uruguay.

In the ensuing battle, Exeter was severely damaged and forced to retire; Ajax and Achilles suffered moderate damage. Damage to Graf Spee, although not extensive, was critical because her fuel system was crippled. Ajax and Achilles shadowed the German ship until she entered the port of Montevideo, the capital city of neutral Uruguay, to effect urgent repairs. Langsdorff was told that his stay could not be extended beyond 72 hours.

As luck would have it our squadron of T-6's just happens to be in Uruguay on a goodwill visit to try and gain support for the Allies war effort, and we've been tasked by the Admiralty to observe the movements of the Graf Spee and report back. As we are unarmed we need to approach low to avoid their big guns, then escape using our maneuverability. If we all manage to get away we will fly on to Argentina as we've been invited to spend some time there as well. However the authorites don't want us flying into any of the main airports in the capital so instead we have permission to land at a dirt strip just north of Buenos Aires. It's so small it's not on Sky Vector but it is on Little Navmap and in P3D. It's ATE at Zarate.

This sortie is 224nm and should take just under 2 hours in our T-6's.The route is very flat and should provide ample opportunity for practising close formation flying for those that want and just a chill flight for others. So we need some stories from Paughco, so get thinking.

Here is a YouTube video that shows all the action, step-by-step. Yeah, it has commercials, but it's still pretty informative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sri-aYukis
