Duxford - Open Fly-In for Warbirds - 10th March 2021

Post by AJL UK »

Thank you to everyone for the feedback regarding this idea.
I thought I'd put together an 'Open fly-in’ on Wednesday (10th March) 20.00-22.00Z at Duxford UK EGSU.
All warbirds are welcome but it would be great to carry on the Spitfire85 theme. The significance being that on the 10th march 1936 Spitfire K5054 test flew again and raised and lowered its undercarriage fully for the first time.

This is a chance for pilots of all experience levels to meet up and enjoy flying our aircraft together using Duxford as a base.
There is no set route or plan for the 'Open Event' but pilots may like to meet at Duxford and - for example - practice general aircraft handling of a 'new' aircraft, build currency on less familiar type, Practice regular and/or adapted circuits or use as an opportunity to build skills and share knowledge to develop formation flying and aerobatics techniques.
Equally if aircraft would like to fly in from another airfield or fly out from Duxford on a particular route to visit elsewhere before returning that would also be great.

As there won't be any active ATC and multiple aircraft operating at the same location and time, it might be worth considering a couple of thoughts to avoid distraction, bumps, scrapes or prangs to our precious vintage/classic aircraft :)
These are just mentioned as things to think about and not ‘rules’ in order to help in an informal way. They are not intended to be restrictive.

-Let the Duxford traffic know of where you are and what you are doing when on the ground or in the circuit.
-Enjoy Formation flying and aerobatics out with the circuit eg overhead Fowlmere.
-Keep the runways and landing area clear for Take offs and Landings
-Try to avoid reciprocal landings unless in an 'emergency'.

The weather isn't looking to good for Wednesday but we'll try for real world weather. As an alternative we'll go for - fair/scattered cloud, Wind 240 at 4kts - Runways 24R and 24L in use.

I really hope that some of you can make it and we can enjoy flying the warbirds at Duxford and in the Cambridgeshire skys.
We might even manage a Balbo!? :)

Hello All,

Just a quick update on the weather for the 'Duxford - Open Fly-In for Warbirds' later today.
There's been low cloud, poor visibility and light-Moderate rain all day at Duxford so we'll switch to the alternate:

Fair/scattered or broken cloud (Whatever your preference) at 046, Temperature 09C, Dewpoint 03C, Pressure Q1020 /30.12, Surface Wind 240 at 5kts - Runways 24 and 24L in use.

Look forward to seeing you later.
