Sunday 21st March - Springtime in the Western Alps

Post by ianfisher 101 »

Captain's

This week we are back in the Alpine region but this time in the Western section. We start in Grenoble before taking on the first of Two challenging airports. We are landing at L'Alpe D'Huez which has a short (1454ft) sloping runway at an elevation of 6115 feet. Alpe d’Huez forms part of the fabulous Grand Domaine ski area which combines the resorts of Alpe d’Huez, Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas into one giant, heavenly playground. In the summer months, Alpe d'Huez transforms into a haven for cyclists drawn to the area because of the famous 21 hairpin bends which regularly feature as a challenging stage on the Tour de France. Hikers and mountain bikers can also take advantage of the lifts running in July and August.

After this it's on to Courchevel which is part of the Trois Vallées, and comprises the resorts of Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Les Menuires-Saint Martin, Val Thorens and Orelle. Courchevel has 11 luxury hotels with a 5-star ranking. The resort has seven restaurants with Michelin stars, of which four have two stars, including Le Chabichou. It also hosts a variety of luxury shops including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Valentino, Loro Piana, Prada, Cartier, Fendi, Dior and Chanel. The majority of Courchevel's visitors are Russian. The towns airport has another very short and steeply sloped runway, with a length of 1,722 ft and a gradient of 18.5%. The airport has a dangerous approach through deep valleys, which can only be performed by specially certified pilots which of course includes every member of the Misfit Squadron due to our superior airmanship. On landing there is no go-around procedure, as most of the world's airports have; there is merely a very steep hill which has seen a few accidents since the airport first opened. Larger propeller aircraft such as the Twin Otter and Dash 7 have been regular users of the airport over the years, but have since been phased out of use and smaller Cessnas and helicopters are now the main users. The History Channel program Most Extreme Airports, ranks it as the 7th most dangerous airport in the world.

From here we fly North past the site of the 1992 Winter Olympics at Albertville, then onto Megève which is a ski resort village in the Mont Blanc massif. It offers downhill runs, snow parks and cross-country trails, with links to La Giettaz. The area features rustic-chic chalets, upmarket hotels and designer boutiques. Its pedestrian center has cobbled medieval streets. Next on the route is the town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, more commonly known as just Chamonix. It's a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. In 2017, it had a population of 8,611. Situated to the north of Mont Blanc, between the peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and the notable Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. The Chamonix commune is popular with skiers and mountain enthusiasts; via the cable car lift to the Aiguille du Midi it is possible to access the off-piste ski run of the Vallée Blanche.

The flight plan takes us to the Eastern side of Mont Blanc but it's too high to fly over at this point so we fly North to Martigny before doing a 180 and continuing South through the Martigny Combe and into the Italian Alps at the enterance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. From here it's Eastwards to the town of Aosta and a touch and go at Aosta airport. Shortly after this we turn North again at the village of Chatillon following the SR46 road which leads us up to one of the most spectular areas on todays flight. The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the border between Switzerland and Italy. The summit is 14,692 ft high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. The mountain overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, to the north-east and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south. Just east of the Matterhorn is Theodul Pass, the main passage between the two valleys on its north and south sides, and a trade route since the Roman Era.The north face was not climbed until 1931 and is among the three biggest north faces of the Alps, known as "The Trilogy".

Once over the pass and Zermatt we drop down again to pick up the river Rhone at Visp which is the capital of the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The town lies at the confluence of the Vispa and the Rhône, 6 miles west of Brig-Glis. From here we fly West along the Rhône valley to our final destionation at Sion, a Swiss town, a municipality, and the capital of the canton of Valais and of the district of Sion. As of December 2019 it had a population of 34,710. Landmarks in Sion include the Basilique de Valère and the Château de Tourbillon. Sion's airfield is for civilian and military use and also serves as a base for air rescue missions.

The route looks amazing. I'll try to be there on Sunday. Will C172 or Bonanza do instead of the Cherokee?

If you don't have a Cherokee then the 172 would be a good option. The Bonanza will be way too fast for this trip.

If Scenery mods are required can you post the links to the mods needed or recommended Ian? Just to make sure I get the right stuff if I can get them sorted before Sunday evening.

cheers,
Lewis

Correct lewis. It's just what I use but you can use default in P3d or FSX. I have them for the extreme sloping runways.
