Friday, April 9 - The Trans-Siberian Adventure Leg 4

And here's where Siberia begins. We're going 460 miles this time, from Yekaterinburg to Omsk, across the Western Steppe. worldatlas.com defines a steppe as ". . . a large flatland with grasses or shrubs but without any trees. This flatland is usually found in areas with a climate that is not wet enough to support the growth of a forest and not dry enough to be classified as a desert". Since there's not a lot to look at on this leg we're opting for Mustangs (or other warbirds) to get it over with quickly.

Along the way we pass Tyumen, which was the first Russian settlement in Siberia. The city's nickname is "the Capital of Villages", due to the predominance of wooden structures throughout the city. Our destination, Omsk, is situated in the south of the West Siberian Plain on the banks of the Irtysh River where it meets the Om River. It's an important railroad hub, and the junction point for the northern and southern branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
