Friday, April 16 - The Trans-Siberian Adventure Leg 5
At first, I thought the next leg from Omsk to Novosibirsk would be more interesting, scenically, than the last, but upon closer examination it looks like more of the same. Ho, hum. But at least we get to do it in different aircraft. Bonanzas and Comanches are perfect for this 325-mile trip. And, our destination has an unusual history.
Construction of the Trans Siberian Railway required the crossing of the Ob river, and in 1891, after much debate, a cattle wade near the village of Krivoshchekovskaya was chosen as the location for construction of a bridge. The city of Novosibirsk grew up around that project, and it has since grown into the third-most populous city in Russia, due in part to the fact that between 1941 and 1942 more than fifty substantial factories were relocated from western Russia to Novosibirsk in order to reduce the risk of their destruction in the Great Patriotic War.
