Sunday 18th April. Hometown Tour - West Country

Post by ianfisher 101 »

So to part Two of our Hometown series of flights. This week we are discovering the West of England and South Wales. Our flight starts at Bristol International Airport EGGD, a small regional airport around 120 miles West of London Heathrow. From here we exit the Bristol CTZ at the Churchill VRP before flying up the Cheddar Gorge. Next it's round the Wells TV mast, onto Wells city and Glastonbury Tour before visiting RNAS Yeovilton. From here we pop over to a great little GA airfield at Compton-Abbas for a touch and go. Now we turn North, fly over Shaftsbury before heading up to Bath. After this it's East to visit RAF Lyneham, RAF Fairford and the former RAF Kemble. Next it's back into Bristol for a fly over Filton airfield before going under both Severn Crossings. After this we fly up the Wye valley into South Wales then across to Abergavenny, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontyprid and down to Cardiff. From here we visit Barry Island before flying back to England over Flatholm. The final part of the flight sees us back in Bristol along the Avon Gorge and under Brunels Clifton Suspension Bridge before a quick visit to the SS Great Britain and finally back to Bristol Airport.

Aircraft is the A2A Piper PA-24 Comanche 250. I few it at 20" manifold so a C182 will do just as well.

Ian, in creating a Plan-G PLG and PLN file I discovered that they would not load your plan correctly. The waypoints
showed up but were not connected.

I discovered the error(2) in your SkyVector -> LittleNavmap entries. There are 2 'pairs of duplicate' waypoints (2 identical entries)
in the file. The first 'pair' occur right after the EGHA waypoint and the second 'pair' occur just prior to the end at EGGD.

The solution to the issue is just to remove one of the duplicate waypoints of each pair. Here is the rote description from SkyVector with the items undelined. Remove the ones in RED.

EGGD 5120N00248W 5117N00248W 5118N00245W 5114N00238W 5113N00239W 5109N00243W EGDY EGHA 5100N00212W 5100N00212W 5123N00221W 5125N00224W LA EGVA EGBP OF 5131N00242W 5137N00239W 5149N00242W 5150N00302W 5145N00322W 5141N00320W 5136N00320W 5129N00311W 5123N00317W 5123N00307W 5127N00252W 5129N00248W 5130N00243W 5129N00239W 5127N00238W 5127N00237W 5127N00237W EGGD

Another issue I am seeing is that waypoint 'LA' is located in France when the route description is loaded into LittleNavMap.

This may be because I run FSX and the data base for LNM is not the same as the V5 db. I can just create a user WP at the LA location in England and delete the erroneous WP in France.

Edit: I deleted LA and then added it prior to EGVA. The Plan-G menu has several 'LA' ndb's and I was able to find the correct one
and enter into the plg/pln files. My LittleNavMap does not show any NDB where the one in the UK is located, near EGDL but
it is there in Plan-G. So LNM users should beware and check this.
