Sunday, May 2nd Hometown Tour - Cumbria & Countries of the British Isles

Following on from the Hometown Tour series I've put together a circular route from my local airfield at Carlisle EGNC. Airfield Plates for pilots who may like to reference them are available here: https://www.cixvfrclub.org.uk/operation ... rlisle.pdf.

The Airfield is my virtual base but I've also enjoyed a good few hours in the real world flying the C152 and PA28. Its also home to Solway Aviation Museum https://www.solway-aviation-museum.co.uk/ - which has a good collection of aircraft and exhibits including the mighty Avro Vulcan XJ823!

RAF Crosby-on-Eden now Carlisle Airport came into operation in February 1941 for training operations.
It was originally home to No. 59 OTU training Hawker Hurricane pilots. This was replaced by 9 OTU, Coastal Command in August 1942, for training long-range fighter crews on Bristol Beaufort and Bristol Beaufighter conversion squadrons, as well as air firing and night flying. The ranges were dotted along the west Cumbrian coast and many look out positions and infrastructure can still be seen when walking on the local beaches.
In August 1944 the station came under the command of 109 OTU, a transport command of Douglas Dakotas. Postwar the airfield became a municipal airport and used for training purposes and civilian flights to destinations including London, the Channel Islands, Belfast Dublin, Northern Isles and the Isle of Man.
The airport is currently owned by Stobart Group who also own Southend Airport and have stakes in a few others in the UK. They have a large distribution centre on the airfield, have built a new terminal building, hangars, south apron and before the Covid outbreak Logan Air were operating flights to numerous UK destinations.
The military often use the Airfield due to its proximity to the Spadeadam Electronic Weapons Range. BBMF are frequent visitors in the summer months when in airshow season and there are are a couple of airworthy Jet Provosts which alternate between Carlisle and Newcastle as a hub.

The route will take us north west along the Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway coast then north through the Galloway mountains, Over Loch Doon to Prestwick Airport.
We then track west over the Isle of Arran and the famous Mull of Kintyre before turning south at RAF Machrihanish to fly to Northern Ireland.
At RAF Aldergrove (Belfast International) we change heading to take us over the Isle of Man before heading south for the Welsh coast.
The plan is to refuel at RAF Valley on Anglesey (Charts available here: https://www.airfieldresearchgroup.org. ... 20EGOV.pdf ) and enjoy the efficiency of the swift RAF ground handling and services to get us back in the air quickly to head north along the Welsh and Lancashire coast. Making landfall at Barrow and then Cark we'll enter the Lake District low flying area and explore the RAF low level route through the fells and over the lakes to return to Carlisle.

This route does reach a fair distance but I thought it may of interest as not only does it cover the local Cumbrian area but also presents a unique opportunity to visit all the countries of the British Isles in one flight.

Hope its of interest and some pilots can make the trip from Carlisle.
