We've not been to Madagascar before, but though the scenery is not as spectacular as last week's it's still an interesting look at an unusual part of the world.
After Indonesia, Madagascar is the world's second-largest island country. Following the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from the Indian subcontinent around 88 million years ago, allowing native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation. Consequently, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot; over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth.
During World War 2, the colonial administration of French Madagascar pledged their allegiance to Vichy France, and British commanders were concerned that this would pave the way for the establishment of Axis bases on the island. Japanese, German, and Italian merchant raiders and submarines had already been operating in the island's waters. Winston Churchill devised a plan to seize control of the island, and an amphibious assault codenamed Operation Ironclad was launched on the 5th of May, 1942. The naval contingent consisted of over 50 vessels, including the aircraft carriers Illustrious and Indomitable, and the battleship Ramillies. This was to be the first British amphibious assault since the landings in the Dardanelles twenty-seven years before. For a full account of this little-known campaign (at least, I'd never heard of it), see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of ... et_Air_Arm.
We're taking Spitfires for this one, and since they are range-challenged you'll need to pay attention to fuel conservation. There are a few spots to top up along the way.
