Friday May 20th. Vuelta a España - Leg 7

Post by ianfisher 101 »

Note this leg will be flown on Thursday 19th May 1900z

So onto leg 7 of our current A2A Misfit Squardon Friday Tour, and this week we contunie East through Andalucia leaving the Costa Del Sol behind us as we reach the Costa de Almeria. The region extends 217 kilometres from Pulpi, on the border with Murcia, to Adra, on the border with Granada. It is a coast of contrasts. Parts are soaring cliffs and isolated bays, such as those in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. Some are wide expanses of sandy beach backed by dunes and marismas, such as those at Almerimar. Of all the costas of Andalucia, the Costa de Almeria is probably the least exploited from a tourist point of view.

We start at the Aeropuerto de Malaga then fly along the coast till we turn inland at Torre del Mar. From here we climb alongside the Sierra de Tejeda range till we reach the City of Granada and the famous Alhambra. Granada is the capital city of the province and is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of four rivers. The city sits at an elevation of 2,421 ft above sea level, yet is only one hour by car from the Mediterranean coast. Nearby is the Sierra Nevada Ski Station, where the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships were held in 1996. In the 2005 national census, the population of the city was 236,982, and the population of the entire urban area was estimated to be 472,638, ranking as the 13th-largest urban area of Spain. About 3.3% of the population did not hold Spanish citizenship, the largest number of these people coming from South America. The area was settled since ancient times by Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths. The current settlement became a major city in the 11th century, In the 13th century it became the capital of the Emirate of Granada under Nasrid rule, the last Muslim-ruled state in the Iberian Peninsula. Granada was conquered in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs and progressively transformed into a Christian city over the course of the 16th century. The Alhambra is an ancient Nasrid citadel and palace, and is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the most visited tourist sites in Spain. Islamic-period influence and Moorish architecture are also preserved in the neighborhood and other medieval monuments in the city.

From here we fly South and pass by the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It contains the highest point of continental Spain: Mulhacén, at 11,414 ft above sea level. I 's a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory and the IRAM radiotelescope are located on the northern slopes at an elevation of 2,800 metres (9,200 ft).

Our final destination on this leg is Almeria which is the capital of the province of the same name. The city was founded in 955 and grew wealthy during the Islamic era, becoming a world city throughout the 11th and 12th centuries. It enjoyed an active port that traded silk, oil and raisins. Due to its arid landscape, numerous Spaghetti Westerns were filmed in Almería and some of the sets are still remain as a tourist attraction. These sets are located in the desert of Tabernas. The town and region were also used by David Lean in Lawrence of Arabia, John Milius in The Wind and the Lion and others. One of Almería's most famous natural spots is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This park is of volcanic origin, and is the largest and most ecologically significant marine-terrestrial space in the European Western Mediterranean Sea.

The route is 147NM and should take a shade over Two Hours in our Cubs.
