Friday, November 11 - The River Danube - First Leg

The Danube was once a long-standing frontier of the Roman Empire. Originating in Germany, the Danube flows southeast for 2,850 km (1,770 mi), passing through or bordering Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine before draining into the Black Sea. The largest cities on the river are Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and Bratislava, all of which are the capitals of their respective countries. The Danube passes through four capital cities, more than any other river in the world. Five more capital cities lie in the Danube's basin: Bucharest, Sofia, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Sarajevo. (Excerpted from Wikipedia.)

The first leg of our trip begins in Constanta, Romania, at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Airport, named for a former Prime Minister. Near its mouth, the Danube forms the border between Romania and the southern region of Ukraine. Our route then runs south to the Bulgarian border, passes close to the Romanian capital of Bucharest, and ends at Vidin (LB40), near the border with Serbia. This leg is 470 nautical miles; for those who need it, there's a convenient refuelling spot at Silistra, near the half-way point.
