No Sound with F10 External View(s) in FSX

Post by LimaPapa »

Hi again,

Moving on from my previous post (WOP3 P51 v Windows10), glad to report that things are coming along fine, with a good engine start most of the time, lol,,(can sympathise with Artur,, post on 13 May,, been there), and really now enjoying the whole A2A P-51 (Mil) experience. I'm working on circuit procedures now and employing a mix of A2A guidance and real world procedures gained from Mustang operators viewed on youtube and Stallion51 etc,,, such is the level of authenticity I find in being able to fairly replicate these procedures in your Sim,, very impressed.

One technique I'm currently employing on turning from Base leg to Final is switching to the 'External View(s)' using the F10 key and sub panel views 'W', which give a wider forward view (minus cockpit furniture), and help with lining up the runway before switching back to cockpit view 'F9' somewhere around short finals. However, there is no engine sound when I switch to F10 or on cycling through the associated sub panel views 'W', which does take a little out of the realsim and puts you in a kinda silent movie mode.

In all other views; Vc (F9), Outside View (F11), and Cycle views using keyboard 'S', (Cockpit, Virtual cockpit, Tower and Spot View), the sound works fine,, though would also be nice to have a little of that Mustang whistle as you run past the Tower in spot view (IMO),,

Could you confirm if I should be getting sound with the F10 external view(s)?, or if not could that be considered for a future update?

Many thanks,

John C (LimaPapa)

Hi John and welcome to the A2A P-51 world!

I too was stumped with the lack of sound in that same view in FSX. In P3D, the planes now have sound in all views by editing a line in a cfg file.

There is a way to get around this in FSX but it will cause the FPS to be cut almost in half. I'm doing this from memory as I have been on P3D since 2018. In that forward view, right click and open another view called cockpit view then minimize it to a corner. The sounds will be generated by the smaller view but you will hear them while using the forward view.

Hope this helps.

Take care

Hi Ed,

Brilliant and an easy fix. As suggested, opened a cockpit view and then minimised it down to one corner and hey presto,, sound

Took her up for a bit of general handling earlier this afternoon and all went ok,, that bit of sound really does make a difference and also allows you to hear the change in engine note as you work the throttle.

Also pleased to report that there was no significant hit on FPS and still averaging 32/33 FPS :D

Many thanks

Hi John,

Ed mentions an edit to the panel.cfg to enable sound in 2D cockpit view and this is possible in the FSX version too. To do this, please go to the "panel" folder and edit the "panel.cfg" file by finding this line:

Code: Select all

//gauge01=WoP3_p51d!cockpitBuilder, 2,2,2,2 //Disable VC - for cockpit builders.
And uncomment it to:

Code: Select all

gauge01=WoP3_p51d!cockpitBuilder, 2,2,2,2 //Disable VC - for cockpit builders.
Thanks,
Nick

Thanks Nick!

I'd forgotten that was available for FSX.

Hi Nick,

Went to FSX > SimObjects > Airplanes > WoP3_P51D > Panel Folder and took a look but I don't seem to have that line in the P51 'panel.cfg',, or am I being a complete biff,,,

Here are the lines currently residing in the panel.cfg, grateful if you could take a look and thanks again for your time,,, JohnC

Hi John,

Have you run the latest Accu-Sim update since you installed the P-51 on your system?

Thanks,

Hi Nick,

no, I hadn't initially seen anything for the P-51 Mil listed in that one.

I was running at update 02_04_19 which I applied on 16 Apr 20, when re-installing everything from my previous tech issue(s) posted on 16 Apr, titled 'WOP3 P-51 versus Windows 10'.

However, I earlier downloaded and ran update 11_05_20,, and when the update found the P-51 Mil I got a screen message 'P-51 is currently up to date etc,,, no update applied'. Though I did notice the line about A2A core files so I checked the panel.cfg file again, and seems no change to my .cfg lines listed above.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to begin playing around with lines of code, and mindful of the problems I created for myself back in April,,,

Grateful for your thoughts,

JohnC

Hi Nick,

Just a quick line to see if you had caught my post dated 21 May, and if you, or the team, had spotted anything missing from my panel.cfg lines?. I had run the latest accusim update (11_05_20), and get a screen message which says I'm currently running the latest version with no update required.

In the meantime I've applied Ed's fix which is working fine.

kind regards,

JohnC (LimaPapa)

Hi Nick,

Many thanks and really appreciate your time on that.

It will probably be the weekend before I get the panel.cfg updated and will let you know the results,,

Post by LimaPapa »

Hi Nick,

No success I'm afraid.

I copied your updated content into the panel.cfg file but I'm still getting no sound when selecting the 2-D External Cockpit View with the F10 key (both F9 Virtual Cockpit and F11 Spot View are working fine).

I also experienced a couple of random failures too, firstly, approx 30mins into a checkflight, FSX froze then graphics went completely haywire requiring a close FSX via Task Manager, then on re-starting I managed to get approx 45min flight time (no sound with F10), taxi back to stand and then randomly began to lose some visual effects: F11 spot view, no fuselage, wings or propeller,, just pilot sitting in a cockpit bubble, and on returning to cockpit view via F9, I noticed no mixture controller, prop or throttle. Sound was still ok so shutdown as normal,, just no visuals.

These may have been random failures and completely unrelated to the original issue and I only mention them as these were my first failings of that type.

I still have the cut-paste lines of my previous panel.cfg if we need to revert back, and we still have Ed's workaround to fall back on.

I do have a workable P-51 so there's nothing desperate here and I do appreciate your time taken.

kind regards,

JohnC
