My wicked Comanche...

Post by Frank.O »

Hi all,

a few days ago my Comanche was a very wicked lady! She bit me in the bum and she really did!
I had taken off from a small airfield, reached cruising alt, set cruise power and was leveling off.
I was busy trimming and as I was also looking for a highway I intended to navigate by I did some turning left and right to find it.

And all of a sudden: screen black, message:
"You have overstressed the aircraft and caused critical damage.
<back to main menu> <restart flight>
Bummer! And I sat there gobsmacked, yaw dropped open and thought WHAT?????
I have done the same a hundred times before without anything strange happening.
Gear and flaps were up, indicated airspeed was around 160MPH, engine rating 55% and as far as I remember temps and engine gauges were all in the green.
I enjoy thoroughly using checklists so I'm pretty sure I have not forgotten anything essential.

HOW COME ??? Ideas anyone? Have I done anything wrong.

When I created the next flight due to the persistence I expected the Comanche to be a complete mess and it was.
I had to completely overhaul everything. But before doing so I had a look at the damages.
And that was a bit puzzling because there were not as many red indications as I had expected.
Prop, Engine, rudders, brakes, one flap were but other parts (magnetos, battery, fuel/oil pumps, carburettor, air/oil filters, oil lines ...) were indicated yellow saying they had a lot of hours on them and were not working properly any more.
In other words they were worn out.
And I wondered why they were not discovered on the inspection I had done the day before.
Strange isn't it?

Regards, Frank

Sounds like you've got the sim overstress/crash detection (whatever it was called in MSFS) enabled. I mean in the sim menu, not in the A2A's own settings for damage and wear. I've always kept that off, for randomly hitting invisible things or getting overstresses due to sim stutters upon accidental task switching is pretty much all it can offer.

You were absolutely right, Esa. All 3 crash options were turned on. Switching them off felt a bit like cheating.
But I did after another encounter of the feature - even more ridiculous.
The Comanche was cold & dark placed in a parking position. I took the drone to have a look around for cloud altitude and visibility and when moving the drone I was told I had collided with an object and caused critical damage. After restarting the flight the Comanche was completely wrecked again - while being parked cold & dark! That convinced me then.

Hi Frank

Yes, hitting invisible stuff and having maniac AI drive/taxi into you have been problems with enabled damage on FS series as far as I can remember. The new one on MSFS appears to be significant sim stuttering (such as what happens when Alt+Tab'ing without pausing the game, though my PC is from early Cretaceous era, certainly exacerbating that) tends to make A2A's flight model go somewhat wild, likely causing an over-stress crash getting detected.

With the settings disabled, you can over-G the aircraft with impunity, and hitting the ground will not cause anything more than a prop strike as far as I can see (never happened to me this far, so not quite sure...). But you can still mistreat the Accu-Sim and get consequences, so tradeoff is rather minimal, considering how simplistic those host game's damage options are in action anyways.
